We are seeking a competent, compassionate, and detail-oriented Technical Officer / Technical Assistant – Sonographer to join our diagnostic imaging team. Role Overview The Technical Officer / Technical Assistant – Sonographer will perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations, operate and maintain ultrasound equipment, support accurate image acquisition, and provide a professional and compassionate experience for patients. The successful candidate will work closely with medical officers, specialists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to produce high-quality diagnostic images and ensure that ultrasound services operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with professional standards. Key Responsibilities Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations in accordance with approved clinical procedures and professional standards. Review patient requests and clinical information to determine the appropriate ultrasound examination. Verify patient identity, examination details, and relevant clinical history before performing procedures. Explain ultrasound procedures clearly to patients and respond professionally to their questions and concerns. Prepare patients appropriately for examinations and maintain their privacy and dignity throughout the procedure. Position patients correctly to obtain high-quality diagnostic images. Operate ultrasound equipment safely and effectively to perform required examinations. Select appropriate transducers, imaging settings, and techniques according to the examination and patient’s condition. Acquire, record, label, and store diagnostic images accurately. Review images for quality, completeness, and diagnostic relevance before concluding examinations. Repeat or adjust imaging where necessary to obtain appropriate diagnostic information. Recognise and appropriately document relevant findings within the scope of professional practice. Prepare preliminary technical observations or documentation for review by the appropriate medical professional, where applicable. Maintain accurate patient and examination records. Ensure that imaging requests, patient details, examination findings, and other relevant documentation remain complete and accurate. Communicate significant or urgent findings promptly through the appropriate clinical channels. Maintain strict patient confidentiality and protect sensitive medical information. Clean, disinfect, and prepare ultrasound equipment and examination areas according to infection-prevention standards. Perform routine checks on ultrasound equipment and report faults, damage, or performance issues promptly. Support preventive maintenance and servicing of ultrasound equipment. Work with biomedical engineering or approved service providers when equipment requires technical attention. Monitor the availability and condition of ultrasound supplies and report replenishment needs. Follow radiation-free ultrasound safety principles and applicable patient-safety procedures. Apply appropriate infection-prevention and control measures during every examination. Maintain a clean, safe, private, and welcoming imaging environment. Manage appointments and examination schedules efficiently where required. Collaborate with doctors, nurses, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals to support coordinated patient care. Participate in quality-assurance activities, audits, and continuous-improvement initiatives within the imaging unit. Stay updated on developments in ultrasound technology, imaging techniques, clinical practice, and professional standards. Participate in continuing professional development and relevant training activities. Support students, trainees, or junior staff where appropriate and within professional scope. Participate in emergency imaging requests and other assigned clinical duties. Perform other relevant responsibilities assigned by the appropriate hospital authority. Educational & Professional Requirements A recognised Diploma, HND, Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent professional qualification in Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, or a closely related field. Valid professional registration and licence to practise in Ghana, where applicable. Demonstrated practical competence in diagnostic ultrasound procedures. Knowledge of ultrasound equipment, imaging techniques, patient positioning, and image optimisation. Understanding of patient confidentiality, infection prevention, and clinical safety requirements. Ability to maintain accurate patient and imaging records. Strong attention to detail and image-quality awareness. Good clinical communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with doctors, nurses, patients, and other healthcare professionals. Ability to operate effectively in a busy clinical environment. Commitment to professional ethics, patient dignity, safety, and continuous learning. Previous experience in a hospital or diagnostic imaging environment will be an advantage.
